No Hot Water — Circuit Breaker Off or Tripped (Single or Multi-Zone)
General · HW-001
Root Cause
Domestic hot water unavailable at some or all taps. The 220V AC water heater element is not receiving power. Cause is typically a circuit breaker that is off or has tripped — either on the main AC distribution panel or at a secondary breaker serving a specific zone. Larger vessels such as catamarans commonly have two or more separate water heater units serving different zones (forward cabins, aft cabins, cockpit). A fault in one zone leaves other zones unaffected, making the fault appear partial rather than total. Shore power and inverter output may both be healthy — the fault is isolated to the water heater circuit.

Conditions
  • vessel on shore power or battery and solar power
  • 220V AC electric water heater element installed
  • single or multi-zone hot water system
  • one or more water heater circuit breakers off or tripped
  • cause of trip unknown — may be overload, manual switch-off, or nuisance trip
  • second heater unit location unknown to operator
Solution
First establish whether all taps are affected or only some. If only some taps are cold, a multi-zone installation is likely — identify which zone is cold and locate the breaker or heater unit for that zone. Check the AC distribution panel for any tripped breakers. Reset tripped breakers once. Allow 45 to 90 minutes for the tank to reach temperature. If the breaker trips again immediately, do not reset — suspect an element or wiring fault. On vessels where heater locations are unknown, consult the vessel general arrangement or system documentation.
Actions
  • Check all taps — determine if fault is total or partial
  • If partial, suspect multi-zone system — identify which zone is cold
  • Locate AC distribution panel and check all water heater circuit breakers
  • If on battery and solar, confirm inverter is on and outputting AC
  • Reset any tripped breaker once — push firmly to ON position
  • Allow 45 to 90 minutes for tank to reach temperature after reset
  • Monitor house bank SOC if on inverter — water heater is a high draw
  • Consider heating water only when SOC is above 60% to protect bank
  • If breaker trips again immediately, do not reset — suspect element or wiring fault
  • If second heater location is unknown, consult vessel general arrangement or system documentation
  • If breaker trips repeatedly, isolate water heater and use engine calorifier loop as alternative if fitted
  • Log incident — repeated nuisance tripping may indicate element degradation
